Spring is here, which means it's time to tend to your home and prepare it for yet another hot Texas summer. Here are four maintenance tasks to help you get started.
Inspect Your Ducts
Considering that leaky ducts can increase your utility bill by up to 40 percent during the summer, it's important to inspect your system at least once a year for damage. To make sure your HVAC system runs as efficiently as possible, check for leaks in the supply and return plenums, fittings in the duct runs, starting collars, splices, and terminations where the ducts and supply registers connect. You can fix a minor leak by re-taping the ducting or replacing the connecting components and ductwork.
Remember: When fixing minor leaks, make sure you use a UL 181 rated duct tape. This tape is extra sticky and has been proven to work on sealing many materials including sheet metal and PVC coated duct.
Upgrade Your Thermostat
If you still use an outdated thermostat that lacks the benefits modern technologies offer, you're throwing money out the window every time you run your air conditioner. Upgrading to a new thermostat will allow you to control your comfort to the degree, allowing you to manage every room of your home at all times of the day (even if you're not in it). Some of the popular features of these thermostats include Hybrid Heat, optimal zoning performance, and Touch-N-Go system control.
Change Your Filter
The easiest way to help your HVAC system cool your home without overworking itself is to its change filter regularly. An air filter helps keep pollutants out of your HVAC system, making sure it operates properly. The dirtier the filter, the harder it is for the system to pump out clean air. According to Energy Star, you should change your home's filter at least once every three months. Use this time to change your home's air filter, remembering to do it again in June as your HVAC system runs heavily in the heat.

Schedule a Tune-Up
Unfortunately, no matter how much you prepare for the summer's heat, your system fails you from time to time. To help prolong that situation from happening, consider hiring a professional to give your HVAC a proper tune-up. When you hire an expert to repair your air conditioner or tune it up, you can rest assured that he or she will offer the right knowledge to make sure your home's HVAC system works in your favor when you need it the most.
